Barbara Moffi: A Canadian from the prairies, Barbara practiced design – first as an interior designer who specialized in hotels, restaurants and bars, and later as a landscape architect inspired by garden myth and magic. For nine years Barbara was caregiver for her mother who suffered from dementia. During that period she pursued craft as a creative outlet, experimenting with painting, sculpture, pottery, and finally fiber felting. With felting she found her medium and her passion and has been “fooling” around with it since 2003.
Artist’s Statement: I begin with an ephemeral design notion and hand-work raw wool into a rough felt vessel. To advance the notion, I applique as inspired and needle-felt obsessively. Through embellishment with beads, feathers, and/or decorative objects a one-of-a-kind bag is created for evening use or any special occasion. Inspiration comes through all manner of moments and mementos – from life in Vermont to everyday objects.
